Alternative Medicine Helps Those with Arthritis

Posted on: February 16, 2018

We treat patients who are suffering from arthritis or joint pain using alternative medicine. Many of the patients that visit our office are experiencing frustration at not being able to achieve the level of relief they need to function without pain and feel healthy. Fortunately, there are ways to treat arthritis and joint pain that can help to ease discomfort and increase mobility. We offer them in our office.

Why alternative medicine is a good option

There are many treatment options available to help people suffering from arthritis. The challenge is that some of these treatment options are invasive or rely heavily on pharmaceuticals. We have found that our patients are actively trying to get away from taking so many prescription drugs for several reasons.

  1. Prescription medication is expensive
  2. Some prescription medications can be addictive
  3. There are many side effects that are associated with taking prescription medication

By comparison, the alternative treatments we offer in our office are affordable, non-addictive and non-invasive with little to no side effects. This makes it possible for people to visit our office for relief from joint pain and do so without concern about potential health risks associated with the actual treatment. In other words, patients that visit our office for help do so with a strong peace of mind.

Reducing inflammation

When it comes to arthritis and joint pain, we are going to look at the amount of inflammation the patient is experiencing. Inflammation is often responsible for this type of pain and it is important to take steps to reduce it. We can often reduce the pain through the use of chiropractic treatment.

This treatment allows us to bring the spine into alignment, while also reducing swelling and inflammation. We may also make additional recommendations for other treatment options to help promote treatment. These treatment options may include:

1. Massage therapy

Massage can be incredibly useful for reducing swelling and inflammation and the pain that they cause. Many of our patients schedule a massage on a monthly basis while others need one as frequently as a couple of times per week. The benefit of massage is that it produces immediate health benefits without the use of prescription drugs.

2. Dietary changes

Some people experience inflammation and swelling because of their diet. For example, anyone who is sensitive to gluten may find that their symptoms are relieved when they go on a gluten-free diet. Reducing sugar can also be beneficial. Simultaneously, there are certain foods and supplements that can help reduce swelling or the pain associated with arthritis/joint pain. In this instance, we often recommend taking a fish oil supplement and adding turmeric to the diet, among others.

3. Cold therapy

Some patients also experience a level of relief from cold therapy, though this is a relatively new treatment option that will continue to benefit from further research.

Customized solutions

Ultimately, alternative medicine is about identifying ways to help the body heal and operate at maximum levels of efficiency. This will lead to a reduction in swelling, inflammation and pain. Since we can incorporate many types of therapy into treatment, we will often recommend several solutions for patients to consider.

While this generally begins with chiropractic care, our goal is using whatever means are necessary to help our patients live their best life. To find out what options we may recommend for you, call our office and schedule an appointment today.
